valentine's day dog treats



This will be my first Valentine's Day with TWO boys to love on! If you follow along on social media (@meganfunky), you definitely already know that Joe and I got a Golden Retriever puppy last weekend! He's a cute little guy named Franklin. With Valentine's Day coming up & my love for creativity in the kitchen, if you think I'm not going to spoil my new puppy, Frankie, you're just crazy. Below I'm sharing the easy, dog treats recipe that you can make anytime, but especially for your fur-Valentine. Can't wait to see how Franklin likes these!



Franklin will be 9 weeks old on Valentine's Day, so he'll probably just get a little bite since he might still have a sensitive stomach, but I am so excited to make him a treat special for him (and freeze the rest to use in the future!) They will stay good for 2 months in the freezer with frosting, or 8 months in the freezer without frosting.

TREAT INGREDIENTS

  • 2/3 cup of coconut flour (you can substitute 2.5 cup of wheat flour or 2/3 cup of tapioca starch, but coconut flour is good for sensitive tummies!)

  • 1/2 cup of canned or pureed pumpkin (to puree it yourself, just boil it for 10 minutes then put in a food processor -- super easy.)

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 tbsp peanut butter

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • *Optional* food coloring -- I used RED!


FROSTING INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup plain greek yogurt

  • 1/2 cup coconut flour (or tapioca starch)

  • 2-3 teaspoons of coconut milk


RECIPE

Prep time: 20 minutes

Cook time: 45 minutes

Ready in just over an hour!

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F or 175 C

  2. Mix together the flour, pumpkin, eggs, peanut butter, salt and cinnamon (all the treat ingredients) in a food processor or with a whisk

  3. Add water as needed to mix, but the dough consistency should be dry and relatively thick

  4. Roll the dough and cut into small 1-2 inch pieces, or use a cookie cutter for a shape of your choice! I used hearts, of course.

  5. Bake for 40 minutes, or until hard

  6. While they are baking, mix together the yogurt and coconut flour for the frosting

  7. Add in the milk, one tsp at a time to make sure you get the right consistency. Mix in the optional food coloring if you decide to use it (I used a little red, so it would turn out pink)

  8. Remove the treats and let them cool

  9. Once cool, spread the frosting on the treats or dip them in it

  10. Let the frosting harden in the fridge or freezer

*With any leftover frosting, you can make tiny balls for treats & freeze them too!


We can't wait to give them to Frankie's future bffs, since he'll be meeting a few of our friends' dogs this week! This makes a great Valentine for the dog lovers in your life - I know I've received a ton of help & tips from friends and coworkers, so I'm excited to give them some to bring home.
