valentine's crafts

The red, pink and purple color scheme gives so much cheer to anyone’s day, which is why I love Valentine’s decorations! Valentine’s Day is always such a fun date night for Joe and me, but to be honest, Galentine’s Day (Feb. 13th) can be equally as much fun. I’m a huge Parks & Recreation and Amy Poehler fan, and as far as I’m concerned, she made Galentine’s Day a nationally recognized holiday. (If you haven’t watched the show, it’s on Netflix… you have no excuse. Go binge watch!) One year, Andrea, and I went as far as to buy each other new watches for Galentine's Day! I love any excuse to throw a party with my girl friends; afterall, they’re the ones who will really appreciate the pink, purple and red pops of color in their lives!

This year, you should do something fun for your galentines, roommates, cousins, or any other women in your life. Add little pops of color around your apartment, make something, or just send a card. It always feels good to feel the love from your friends!

This year, I decided to do some Valentine’s crafts to get in the holiday spirit early! Below, you’ll see three of my favorite Valentine’s projects: DIY pom pom garlands, DIY Lush lip scrub, and DIY tassel garlands! Cheap, easy, and fun. Let’s get started!

1. DIY POM POM GARLAND

My dear friend, Chloe, got me hooked on pom poms when she sent me a garland to decorate my tree in December. I've since become obsessed. They are fun and easy to make, and have so many uses! Read more here in an interview about Chloe Towersey's apartment decor to see how she uses pom poms to embellish her curtains, storage baskets, Christmas tree, garlands, etc. I don't have much space in my apartment (as you probably know from my living big in small spaces post), so I love using garlands to decorate for holidays over my kitchen's french doors. They make great gifts for your galentine's or just an easy and quick way to brighten up your apartment for the holiday!

MATERIALS:

  1. Yarn

  2. Scissors

  3. Clover pom pom maker(s)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Follow this YouTube tutorial to make the pom pomps, and use the strings to tie pom poms onto one long piece of yarn used to create and hang the garland. I typically put between 9-12 pom poms on each garland.

For the next two crafts, I paired up with blogger, Blair Sullivan, of THIS + THAT Blog to create some fun decor for a pre-Valentine's event we hosted at SugarFina and some gifts for our best gal pals. Keep an eye out for a recap of the event later this week too.

2. DIY LUSH LIP SCRUB

Lip scrubs are absolutely essential if you're a lipstick or lipgloss wearer. They keep your lips unchapped so it doesn't look clumpy when you apply your lip color. I love my Lush sugar scrub and use it daily after my morning shower. I'm so excited I came across how to mimic this sugar scrub, in DIY fashion. It gives your lips the tiniest little tint of color too that looks completely natural. Perfect for a day at the office. It's SO easy to DIY, and makes a cute little gift for your girl friends.

MATERIALS:

*Makes one lip scrub; multiple as needed.

  1. ½ tablespoon olive oil

  2. 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

  3. 1 drop vanilla extract (or any other flavor!): you can also use 1 drop of an essential oil

  4. 1 drop red or pink food coloring: it may give a tiny tint to your lip until it wears off, so be warned about using a color like blue or green!

  5. Container(s): I used these from the Container Store

  6. Let sit overnight in a refridgerater to harden a little bit.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Combine everything into a bowl and put into a container. It’s so simple, it’s silly.

3. DIY TASSEL GARLAND

I've written about this craft before, and it's one of my favorites because you can use it as a decoration for any type of event to brighten up a room. For our Valentine's day tassel garland, we chose to use red, pink, white and silver tissue paper. I love the metallic pop that the silver gave to the look.

MATERIALS:

  1. Tape

  2. String

  3. Tissue paper

  4. Scissors

INSTRUCTIONS:

Fold the tissue paper in half, then half again. Make slits leaving about 1 inch at the top. Unfold and roll up, then twist in half to make a loop at the top. See my previous DIY Tassel Garland post for the detailed, step-by-step instructions with pictures.
