that beautiful glow

My mom constantly reminds me to take good care of my skin because I'm at the age where it will have a major impact on how I age in the future. She insists I put sunscreen on my hands and face every day because those are the first to age. I always kind of give her the "yeah, yeah, yeah," and don't really make a change outside of the daily face wash. I've been lucky to have very clear skin growing up with rarely any breakouts, but want to start being proactive and protecting my skin from aging quickly. As I'm in my mid twenties, my mom will be so proud to read that I finally decided to take her advice to heart. I don't want to hear "I told you so," Mom, but I'm actually loving my new daily routine and can see results of more evenly toned and hydrated skin... so thanks!

I went and spoke with the pros at two beauty stores in the city, to see what's best for my skin. First, I headed to Credo Beauty on Fillmore in Pacific Heights. Credo Beauty's motto is "Totally Clean, Super Good, Absolutely Beautiful." This means that they promise totally clean ingredients that are healthy and safe, super good brands that are sustainable and have ethical sourcing, and absolutely beautiful products that are effective. I really like how their products make an impact on our personal worlds, but also protect our environment and animals.

Next, I swung by Sephora in Union Square to pick up a couple products that I am familiar with and have used in the past. Below, I'll share what I ultimately decided to purchase and use for my morning and night face cleansing routines. It has left my skin tone much more even, reduced dark circles under my eyes, given me more hydration, and eliminated breakouts:

1) Wash your face. I am using Dickinson's Gentle Skin Cleanser and use a facial sea sponge that I got at Flora Farms in San José del Cabo. You can find a similar one here.

2) Use a clarifying toner. I am using Clinique Clarifying Lotion 2. There are lots of different types of these for different skin types. If you have extremely dry skin, I recommend a mild toner instead, like Dickinson's Original Witch Hazel Pore Perfecting Toner, or to just skip this step completely.

3) Use an under eye cream. This is very important because the skin under the eyes is more fragile, so it gets dry and ages quicker. Eye cream will help reduce puffiness and dark circles in this area. I use Pai Skincare Echium & Argan Gentle Eye Cream. Pai is a UK-based brand and this one is my favorite of all the products because I can really see it working!

4) Moisturize. In the morning, I use a tinted moisturizer with SPF: 5 in 1 Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen with SPF 30. At night, I use First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Face Moisturizer.

I've also been putting sunscreen with SPF 30 on my hands each morning. Mom, I'll thank you one day for this too!

I also love to add in a face mask to my nightly routine every once in awhile to rejuvinate my face. My favorite face masks are from Lush, like this one. The Lush store litereally smells so amazing when you walk in, as all the products are completely fresh and natural. I tell all my friends about Lush beacause I'm such an advocate. I get a lot of my lotions, shampoos, and soaps from there. If you haven't checked it out, there is a store on Union in the Marina, and they're also located all around the country.

I can't wait to use my new skin care routine when I travel, because changing climates during travel is really the main time I have any issues with facial clarity. I'm excited about finally being proactive instead of reactive with my skin care routine!

In terms of makeup, my sister-in-law, Allison (@lifewithessentialoils) recently told me about a website called They have a safe cosmetics database, and medically rank products, ranging from makeup, to face washes, to lotions, to laundry detergent and more. This is really interesting to me. I ran all my products through the search, and the website spits out a rank on a scale from 1-9 (1 being the best, 9 being the worst). I was excited to see most of my products were a 1-3 out of 9, which means they are pretty good for me! There were a few that I decided to throw out and research better ones to replace them with.

I've pretty much been using the entire BareMinerals line since high school when I first found out about the brand. These products were mostly ranked 1s. I use their medium-beige Original Foundation, Warmth bronzer, Cheerful blush, and Mineral Veil. The BareMinerals products seem safe and good for you based on the information on the website. EWG also has an app that you can download. That way, next time you're at the store buying a new product, you can look it up first to make sure it's actually good for you, despite what the brands' marketing says!

Hope this helps if you're looking to prevent aging and keep your skin glowing like your heart! If you have any suggestions for me, please do share the products you use in the comments section below.
